NIFT Introduction
National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) group of institutes in India that help students acquire the skills and knowledge to build a career in fashion. Established under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, and given statutory status in 2006, NIFT is awards degrees and other academic distinctions to its students. Names like Ritu Beri, Shantanu Goenka, Prabal Gurung, Nikita Anand and Manish Arora can be found within the alums of NIFT and they are only a few among a hundred successful designers this institute has produced.
The institute offers courses in design, fashion management as well as fashion technology for the international fashion industry. NIFT has been at the forefront of providing professional and talented human resources to the apparel and textile industry and is the pioneering institute of fashion education in India. It also works as a knowledge service provider to the central and state governments on areas such as design development, and regulation of handloom and handicraft businesses.

Admission to all colleges of NIFT takes place through the rigorous NIFT Entrance Examination. The age limit for a Bachelor’s degree is 23 years, but an exemption of 5 years is given for SC, ST and physically handicapped students.
The exam will consist of 2 Stages
Stage 1: General Ability Test (GAT) & Creative Ability Test (CAT)
Stage 2: Situation Test
The syllabus for NIFT entrance exam includes Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability, General Knowledge and Current Affairs. The two tests are called General Ability Test (GAT) and Creative Ability Test (CAT) respectively.

GAT Syllabus
The General Ability Test (GAT) is a written test for all five courses offered at NIFT. After clearing GAT, students are required to qualify for CAT. For NIFT Entrance Exams 2022, the GATx` exam will include sections such as Quantitative Ability, Communication Ability, English Comprehension, Analytical Ability, and General Knowledge and Current Affairs.

CAT Syllabus
The Creative Ability Test (CAT) is conducted all over India to evaluate candidates’ observation power, intuitive and design ability , concept development, creative and innovative use of illustration, colour skills, and more. It is divided into modules such as Discernment Ability, Power of Observation, Creativity in Development of a Thought, and Design Ability of the Applicant. The test is conducted every year by one of the IIMs based on a policy of rotation.

B.Des. (Fashion Design)
NIFT’s flagship program in Fashion Design has played an influential role in the growth of the Indian fashion industry over the three decades of its existence. The curriculum itself is a hands-on experience which enables students to conceptualize design, create patterns, and put into production garments of impeccable quality. A unique aspect of the course is the inclusion of traditional rural handicraft, whereby via a cluster program students work with indigenous rural artisans. This valuable insight into the broad spectrum of Indian fashion is further enhanced through internship opportunities at leading fashion houses or manufacturers.

B.Des. (Leather Design)
The Leather Design Program at NIFT was originally meant to focus on traditional leather products. Over the years, however, the programme has come to encompass areas of Fashion Goods, Personal Lifestyle Accessories and Footwear. Emphasis is laid on the integration of design concepts with material knowledge. The multidisciplinary curriculum is combined with exposure through field trips, tannery training, craft cluster programs, and graduation projects along with internships. Students learn to explore and innovate with materials, techniques, forms and components.

B.Des. (Accessory Design)
The Accessories Design course involves exploration and experimentation of thoughts and ideas with materials in order to create a medium of powerful self-expression. The program employs a range of teaching methods including lectures, studio projects, group work, field trips, presentations and reflections. Students introduced to high-end digital tools and at the same time immersed with foundational grasp of traditional craft techniques. Towards the completion of this course, students can gain a clear understanding of the broader cultural and social context of design.

B.Des. (Textile Design)
The Textile Design curriculum offers opportunities for students to experiment with materials and create innovative design and patterns of textile. The programme builds upon the integration of textile technology with the creative forces of design, while sequentially keeping in mind the historical, social and cultural contexts of the design industry today. The programme prepares students for careers in export houses, buying agencies, handloom and handicraft cooperatives, design studios, home and apparel retail brands.

B.Des. (Knitwear Design)
The Knitwear Design programme was developed with a view towards training design professionals who can cater to knitted apparel, an exclusive section in fashion. Students will be equipped to handle areas such as art and illustration in fashion, garment construction, knitting patterns, computerized knitting techniques, trends and forecasting, production, planning, and finally, merchandising and marketing.

The Fashion Communication (FC) programme at NIFT aims to make it feasible for brands to communicate their products, identity and strategy by providing a platform for these very brands. It primarily focuses on four major domains – Graphic Design; Space Design; Fashion Media; and Fashion Thinking. The recently restructured curriculum is designed to instil a vigorous communication design base with continuous visits from industry professional, industry-linked projects and lectures by experts. Fashion Communication graduates from NIFT are qualified professionals with effective and viable solutions for the fashion and lifestyle industry.

The B.F. Tech (Apparel Production) programme prepares students for a range of work profiles within the apparel manufacturing sector. The course curriculum introduces different essential streams including apparel manufacturing technology, quality management, information technology, artificial intelligence etc. The fundamentals governing aesthetic and design elements are learned hand-to-hand with management basics.
